We started off this Walking Wednesday by parking on Willoughby Road in Larkhill, as we wanted to experience the scenic walk to the stone circle. Plus, it’s free! When you’re making your way to the start, it may feel like you’re not in the right place. However, if you spot a large white sign, you’re on the right track. Park up and make your way to the gated entrance, then head down the stone path which will lead you straight to Stonehenge.
We knew the walk would take around 20 minutes, so we packed light and made sure we brought the essentials. That, of course, included our FootActive Sports insoles to make sure our feet were completely supported!
As you make your way down the stone path, you might find that the first half of the walk is pretty sheltered from the weather. Which is something we discovered when the wind suddenly smacked us at the halfway point. Luckily, we could see Stonehenge in the distance to help keep us motivated. As you start to see your first glimpse of the stones, it does make you wonder just what they are and why they're here (if not just to slow down the traffic on the A303).
Who made Stonehenge?
Now, this is an interesting question and the short answer is: Lots of people.
The Stonehenge that we see today is an accumulation of different societies building on each other, from 3000BC to the 21st century. The English Heritage website gives a great timeline showing off these different stages, which allows you to follow the general evolution of the site.
The initial construction of the Stonehenge was actually more dirt than stone, as it’s believed that the site was first created using earth mounds. The stones were constructed over 500 years later and erected to form the circular monument. It wouldn’t be an article about Stonehenge without pointing out just how impressive this was, as not only were these stones extremely heavy, but some were sourced from over 150 miles away. Imagine having to move a 25 ton stone without modern day resources!
What is Stonehenge used for?
Historically, the site and the fields around it have been used as burial grounds. With remains and offerings being found at the base of Stonehenge. In fact, if you were to fly over the landscape surrounding the stones, you would see large circular mounds which signify larger graves. Some evidence also suggests that the position of the stones were based on the astronomical map at the time. Leading researchers to believe there was a significant spiritual intention with the creation of Stonehenge.
In the 21st century, Stonehenge is still visited and celebrated every Equinox and Solstice, with many believing in its spiritual power. These events are free to attend and we recommend you check them out at least once to experience a step into the celestial.
How does Stonehenge help define the Bronze age in the UK?
The Bronze Age in the UK dates from around 2500BC to 700BC, right around the time of the Stonehenge construction. This monument has helped anthropologists study different cultures throughout the ages. By studying the changes to traditions, such as burials, they can create a timeline of how humans developed and when new cultures were introduced. We can also learn about ancient building techniques and how these methods were sophisticated enough for Stonehenge to be standing over 4000 years later.
Is Stonehenge worth a visit?
Considering the overwhelming amount of history, we believe Stonehenge is definitely worth the visit. Its place in the Wiltshire countryside has become an iconic image for the South West, with many people travelling internationally to experience its rich history.
It has even been recognised for its historical significance. In 1986 it was officially added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list, the organisation stated that it’s
“one of the most impressive prehistoric megalithic monuments in the world on account of the sheer size of its megaliths, the sophistication of its concentric plan and architectural design, the shaping of the stones”.
To be able to see an ancient monument crafted over thousands of years is quite breathtaking, which makes it a must-see!
Should you do the free route?
If you’d rather do the walk and are happy to view the stonehenge from a slight distance, then yes. It is. We didn’t think it took away from our visit being a few meters behind everyone else. Honestly, we appreciated the space. It allowed us to take in the experience a little easier. This does of course depend on how busy the site is when you visit.
Overall, our trip to Stonehenge was not only great fun, but also left us with a better understanding about the stones themselves. To see them up close was amazing, it allows you to really appreciate the effort it would have taken to make such a monument. The walk itself is pretty easy, which made it even more enjoyable!
