25 KM Training Plan: 4-Week Update

Four weeks into the FootActive's 25 km training plan, and so far, so good! My legs are still moving, the training is ticking along, and that 25 km finish line is starting to feel a little more achievable - or at least that's what I’m telling myself!

This 25 km race training plan has already brought a mixture of road and trail running, long runs, treadmill sessions, warmer weather and a few lessons along the way. Four weeks in, the focus has been on building consistency, increasing weekly mileage and getting comfortable with spending more time on my feet.

The only small hitch was that I missed one of my long runs earlier on in the programme. It was a lesson well learned, as I had gone to a Drag Queen show night, which may or may not have given me a rather sore head for a couple of days. It definitely proved the point that you shouldn’t burn the candle at both ends - running while hungover is not for me!

Luckily, as it was a 10 km run, a distance I was already comfortable with, my running coach (aka my Ultra running step-mum) said to just leave it and focus on the next run in the plan - phew. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your training is accept that one missed run isn't going to undo all your hard work.

Road, Trail and a Little Bit of Treadmill

So far, the 25 km training plan has been a mixture of road and trail running, with just two treadmill sessions thrown in when the weather or timings have made getting outside difficult.

While the treadmill is a great option, I feel so incredibly stiff afterwards - my neck in particular suffered from my last session. Because the surface is smaller and more confined, I find myself tensing up and prioritizing staying centred on the belt rather than focusing on my overall running mechanics.

Will I do another treadmill session? Yes. Will I try to avoid them? For the sake of my neck, also yes.

Is treadmill running good for 25 km training?

Treadmill running isn't necessarily better or worse than running outdoors - it is simply different.

The belt moves for you and the ground is perfectly flat, so your body misses out on those real-world demands. Whether you are running on the road or trail outside, you're the one doing the work to push off a solid surface while your legs constantly adjust to every little change in the path, the incline and the terrain.

Some studies even hint that treadmill running tweaks your mechanics and how your muscles fire. While the surface is much kinder to your joints than hard pavement, that predictable, looping motion means you aren't quite building the same robustness required for the unpredictability of the great outdoors.

For anyone following a 25 km training schedule, this is worth considering. Getting your miles in on the actual surfaces you'll face on race day is a good way to make sure your body knows what to expect when the pressure is on.

For me, the two treadmill sessions haven't caused any problems, but they have reinforced how much my body benefits from being outside.

Now, if we could just avoid another heatwave, that would be fantastic.

How to Handle the Heat Without Melting

Speaking of heat… summer running has certainly brought its own challenges!

Running in hot weather can make a familiar pace feel considerably harder, so it's important to adjust expectations and listen to your body. This is particularly important during longer 25 km training runs, when time spent on your feet increases.

Beat the Heat: My Top Tips

- Run early or late: Catching the cooler air at sunrise or dusk is definitely the way to go. No matter when you go, make sure you stay safe and visible!

- Don't forget your fuel: Longer runs mean longer periods on your feet, so refuelling matters. My current favourite? Sap Good Energy sachets. They are made from Organic Class A Maple and Himalayan Salt. These are really gentle on my stomach and actually taste great!
- Walking is allowed: Yes, even when you're training to run 25 km! Taking a short walking break when it's particularly hot can help you manage your effort and keep moving without completely draining yourself.
- Forget your ego: A slower pace in the heat isn't failure. Your body is working harder to regulate its temperature, so the same pace can feel much more difficult than it would on a cooler day.
- Listen to warning signs: If you feel dizzy, unusually weak, confused or unwell, stop and cool down. There is absolutely no medal for pushing through heat exhaustion.

Most importantly, don't feel like you have to run at your usual pace just because your watch says so. If you are a Garmin wearer, you rightly know just how judgemental those things can be!

What Has My 25 km Training Looked Like?

The first four weeks of my 25 km race training plan have focused less on speed and more on building a solid foundation. The aim has been to gradually increase my weekly mileage while getting my body used to longer periods of running.

That has meant a mixture of easier runs, longer sessions and different surfaces, rather than trying to make every training run faster than the last. Road and trail running have made up most of the programme, with treadmill sessions filling the gaps when getting outside hasn't been practical.

The long runs have been particularly important because they are helping me become more comfortable with the idea of running further than I normally would. There is something reassuring about seeing the distance gradually increase - even when the legs aren't quite as enthusiastic as the brain!

Four Weeks Down – What's Next?

The first four weeks have been about building consistency, getting comfortable with the schedule and gradually increasing my weekly mileage.

The next phase is where things start to get more challenging. The distances will increase, the hills will get tougher and the speed sessions will become even more important as my body continues to build the strength and endurance needed for 25 km.

So, the plan is simple: Keep training. Keep listening to the body. Keep fuelling. Keep putting one foot in front of the other.
