I’ve been told that as a runner you always remember your firsts, whether that’s doing your first 5k or finally getting yourself a vest (because that is the true runners accessory). Last Sunday marked Rabbit Run Club’s first ever official 10k race! With such a momental first, I of course had to document it. 

Three of our members (myself included) signed up - our event of choice was the Two Tunnels race in Bath, organised by Relish Running and made possible through the conservation work of Walk Wheel Cycle Trust. Definitely something I know I needed when heading into this race! 

Sunday's run celebrated not only the joy of running but also the power of collaboration, accessibility and community investment. Tom Room, the founder of Relish Running, describes the events as:

"a family day out where runners of different ages and abilities can come together"

A sentiment shared by the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, the charity responsible for restoring the historic tunnels that give the race its name. As Di Gornall, Director of Fundraising and Supporter Engagement, explains:

"Through our work we aim to create more joy per journey. We're focused on making the Network accessible for everyone, removing all physical barriers by 2030 so every user has equal access to our routes."

The partnership between Relish Running and Walk Wheel Cycle Trust is what makes this event truly special. It took more than seven years to restore the tunnels and transform them into the much-loved shared pathway used today. Without the Trust's vision and dedication, the Two Tunnels Race would simply not be possible. In turn, Relish Running supports the charity's ongoing work by donating £1 for every runner taking part, helping to maintain and improve the route for future generations. Together, these two organisations have created one of the most distinctive running events in Bath, proving that when sport, community and conservation work hand in hand, everyone benefits. Even small town run clubs, like us!

More Than a Race

For Rabbit Run Club, this race marked a major milestone for all of us at FootActive.

Not only was it the first-ever official organised event for our Rabbit Run Club, but it also saw one of our members, Ben, take on his very first running race! We couldn't have chosen a better introduction. The welcoming atmosphere created by Relish Running made the event feel accessible from the moment we arrived. Whether you were chasing a personal best or simply hoping to finish, there was a genuine sense that everyone belonged.

As Tom Room says:

"Go for it! Don't overthink, just sign up and get started."

Looking back, that's advice we're very glad we followed!

Participating in the Two Tunnels Race provided a perfect opportunity to champion a core FootActive value: fostering community and inspiring others to embrace the outdoors and the physical rewards of staying active. This shared vision makes the collaboration between Relish Running and the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust so meaningful to our team. While Relish delivers incredible race-day memories, the Trust is dedicated to maintaining inclusive, secure pathways for everyone throughout the year. These tunnels are a vital segment of the National Cycle Network, a vast 12,000-mile stretch that empowers people across the country to walk, wheel, and run with confidence.

Crossing the finish line felt like supporting something much bigger than a race itself.

Race Day: Through the Tunnels and Beyond

When race day arrived, we got to Brickfields Park around an hour before the start. We wanted to soak up the atmosphere before heading to the start line. The race village was brilliantly organised, with plenty of space, a waterproof bag drop, food vendors and, most importantly, good coffee.

I also managed to briefly say hello to Tom Room before the race began. Despite overseeing the day's operations, he still found time to stop and chat, which summed up the friendly nature of the event perfectly.

As we prepared for the 10K, Ben and I decided to run together. He was carrying an injury, so the plan was simple: enjoy the experience and get to the finish line feeling strong. Meanwhile, Will embraced that determination only a Rabbit Run Club runner could and set his sights on a PB. 

One thing we particularly appreciated was that Relish Running organised a proper warm-up session before the start. Alongside our fellow yellow-bib runners, we joined in with high knees, star jumps and squats (although I drew the line at jump squats). It was a fantastic touch that got everyone moving and ready for the challenge ahead.

Then, before we knew it, we were off.

There was a slight bottleneck at the start as runners navigated a muddy descent onto the road. Deciding it was probably best not to eat grass (well, mud) within the first minute, I opted for a cautious walk down. Ben and I settled into a comfortable pace of around 6:30/km. Before long, we reached the first tunnel and it was not what I expected. While the concept of a tunnel is not lost on me, I didn’t think it would be as dark as it was - only lit up by small lights on the side. It created a calmness. The air was cooler and it allowed me to really settle into my strides. 

The atmosphere throughout the course was fantastic. Volunteers cheered runners onwards, spectators offered encouragement and even walkers and cyclists using the route joined in. Some people were handing out sweets too, unfortunately, I've yet to master the art of running and eating simultaneously, so I had to decline - a decision I still slightly regret (who doesn’t love free food).

Looking After Your Feet

Let's talk about feet.

There is plenty of discussion around expensive running shoes and finding the perfect setup, particularly for new runners. My advice is simple: don't overcomplicate it. What works for one runner won't necessarily work for another. When discussing injury prevention with Tom Room, he described himself as a:

"big believer in learning to listen and understand your body"

He also pointed out that many modern "super shoes" aren't suitable for everyone. Even experienced runners can pick up injuries if they make sudden changes to their footwear.

Why Events Like This Matter

After spending the day at the Two Tunnels Race, it's safe to say we're firmly on team running and team Relish. 

Events like this provide an accessible introduction to the sport while creating opportunities for people to connect, challenge themselves and become part of a community.

One of the things that stood out most during the race was the sense of belonging. Whether it was fellow runners offering encouragement, volunteers cheering from the sidelines or spectators shouting names as people passed, everyone was made to feel welcome.

Having a strong running community on your doorstep is something special. Better still, organisations like Relish Running allow you to travel to different events while still feeling part of that same supportive community.

To finish, I'd like to share one final quote that Tom mentioned when I asked about his favourite motivational sign spotted during a race:

 "We do this not because it's easy, but because we thought it would be easy."

I suspect most athletes have those moments where they question their choices mid-run. Yet, it is that post-race rush - when the endorphins kick in and the struggle fades into a feeling of absolute invincibility - that makes running such a compelling and addictive pursuit. Which is why this quote in particular demonstrates how a sense of hubris, while totally unfounded, can ultimately push us to do amazing things.
